Playero pequeño, muy difícil de diferenciar del Playero Semipalmado del que se diferencia por tener el pico con una sutil curvatura hacia abajo. Se diferencia del Playero Menor por tener las patas negras, que el Playero Menor las tiene amarillenta. Además el Menor tiene un pico más pequeño y delgadom que el Occidental.
Anida en una zona restringida en el oeste de Alaska y en Siberia, desde donde migra todos los años hacia las costas de Centro y Sudamérica a pasar el verano austral. Vuelan siguiendo la costa del Pacífico y parando en los humedales en el camino.
